To Self-Promote or Not To Self-Promote? Marketing Tips For Writers and Artists

There is a debate about how much time artists should spend blogging, tweeting, marketing, and otherwise promoting themselves and connecting with fans/followers/friends. Some people who are in the know have the opinion that you should spend a LOT of time doing this and some people say you shouldn’t worry about it at all and just focus on making your art the best it can be. I think you have to find a balance.

No one is going to promote you if you don’t promote yourself. 

When you are starting out in any field as an artist, you are going to have to promote yourself, especially in this day and age. There are SO many writers, artists, musicians, etc. out there, and you need to make sure your work is visible. The number one way to do this is through the internet. But get creative. Don’t just tweet about your writing or your music over and over and over again.

Think outside the self-promotion box.

It’s perfectly fine to let people know when your products are coming out or when you have events, but you should also think of internet marketing as another art form altogether. Use your creativity to post content that people will want to see. This will get you more links, more web traffic, and eventually, more followers and fans that are interested in your art. This may mean posting covers of pop songs on the ukulele or writing personalized sonnets for Facebook fans or challenging yourself to post a blog every day for 30 days *cough* or anything else you can think of. Get creative!

Be shameless.

It’s called “shameless self-promotion” for a reason. I’m not saying spam your Facebook and Twitter followers with updates every five seconds about your new gig, but don’t feel bad for posting about your art. Other people are posting pictures of their children or their cats or their meals all of the time, so why shouldn’t you post about something that’s equally as important to you? And if people don’t want to hear about your art, why are you friends with them again? Why are they following you? They can hide you or unfriend you if they don’t want to see it. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel guilty for posting what you want to post about.

Use self-promotion as a way to work on your craft.

It is true that social media, blogging, and marketing all take time. And this is time you are not writing your novel or writing a new song or making a new painting. However, you can use these tools as a way to practice your craft. If you challenge yourself as a musician to post fun covers or write new songs and post them on YouTube, you are doing both marketing and working on music. If you are a writer, work on your craft by writing and revising blogs. If you are a painter or a photographer, get creative with Instagram or Pinterest. Share your art!

Limit yourself to one cat video per day.

You want to make sure you don’t let it get out of hand, though. If you are spending five hours a day Tweeting about cat videos, that may not be productive. (And I really love cat videos.) Make sure you are actively working on your product (whatever that is) in addition to promoting and marketing. This way, you will have more to promote anyway!

  1. I really liked the section about thinking outside the self-promotion box. I think there are ways to make it fun. My blog and vlog are ways for me to get out there for the public to see, but I also do them for myself and because I genuinely enjoy them. I’m sure the same goes for you!

    • That’s a good point! And if you can have fun while putting out content instead of just putting out the same old “look at me, look at me” content, your readers/followers will appreciate that a lot more.
