30 Day Poetry Challenge – Day 18 – Heard It through the Coffee Line – Station yourself in 3 public places over the span of 30 minutes. Pull whatever interesting lines you can overhear into a “found sound” poem.
After hearing three different people in three different conversations in various locations in the Marietta Square say “Easter comes once a year,” “Scott has read the Bible six times through,” and “You don’t have to be a Christian to go to church,” it was pretty clear what my poem was going to be about.
Easter comes once a year.
Families gather, crowding the seats and pews of every church
in the entire metro Atlanta area
with their daughters
dressed in pastel dresses
and ribbons in their hair,
their sons dressed in
Many of them color in coloring books
while their parents
play on their smart phones and iPads
and post “Happy Easter!” statuses on their profiles, checking
in at the churches they attend
for all of their friends to see.
Scott has read the Bible six times through, and
he listens intently–ignoring the visitors
You don’t have to be a Christian to go to church.
They will be back next year.
